Kid Key Lock Portable

KidKeyLock performs lock key and mouse actions, but it could be easier to use. As it is, this seems like an unfinished app that has promise but needs some polishing.

Things got off to a not-so-good start when we unzipped the folder and found three folders. With labels like bin, HTML, and various, it wasn't clear where to go. KidKeyLock doesn't install, so we searched for an EXE file. In bin, we found two that were duplicates except for an extra EXE at the end of one file. Both seemed to produce the same results and the KidKeyLock icon was added to the taskbar in both cases. When you place your mouse over it, you're directed to type "kklsetup" or "kklquite," but there's no interface in which to do so. Turns out, you literally just type either one on your keyboard, the first to access the few options and the second to exit the program. The same options can be found if you right-click the icon. The compact settings window is plain and fairly straightforward, with only two main sections for mouse and keyboard. You can choose up to five mouse functions to lock, including locking the left and right buttons and mouse wheel. For the keyboard, there's only a slider. You don't have any way to control what happens at each increase and there's no onscreen information to tell you wha

t's going on. When put in action, the mouse function locks worked as advertised and we noticed less keyboard functionality, as well, but we've gotten the same results from similar tools that are much easier to get up and running.

Anyone who's had a three-year-old completely undo the desktop or delete important files will appreciate KidKeyLock's goal, but the execution needs some work. From a more streamlined approach to more keyboard locking control, the program is lacking some important final touches.

It can combine numerous clips and soundtracks in a wide range of video formats into movie projects, or build an entire production out of a single clip. It supports drag-and-drop editing, real-time effects previews, format conversion, importing and exporting files, captions, narration, and more. It can burn DVDs, HDs, and Blu-ray discs and output video to portable devices. It can also capture video from camcorders and other devices.

It's a rare video editor that you can just fire up and start making movies with, but that's what we did with VideoPad Pro. We browsed to a cartoon saved as an MPG file. VideoPad Pro scanned it and displayed it in the left half of the split main view, with its frames running sequentially along the bottom of a main preview window in a scrollable, time-marked view, and also displayed its information in the left-hand Media List panel. Pressing the Play button played the clip normally. Extracting clips from the main clip was incredibly simple; using the timeline, we selected an In Point and an Out Point and clicked the green down arrow. VideoPad extracted the clip and displayed it below in the Video Track section, which is just above the similar Audio Track. In this manner, we quickly cut up and rearranged the cartoon out of sequence, and then previewed it in the right-hand pane. The transitions between merged clips were seamless. We could save our finished clip or subject it to a wide range of processing and production tools. Toolbar icons let us quickly insert blank spaces or add narration, captions, and other effects. Clicking Build Movie called up a dialog that let us select the video format and whether to burn a disc, send it to a portable device, upload it to YouTube, and other choices.

With smartphones, video sharing sites, and Webcams everywhere, there's no lack of raw video resources, just a need for a powerful, easy-to-use tool like VideoPad Video Editor Professional to put your projects together, polish them up, and present them in the format of your choice. More than just fast and competent, though, we also found it fun to use.

You can import files from Quicken, Money, and other apps, and HomeBank's import assistant dialog will hold your hand while you do it. We opened the Manage Accounts tool and created an account, manually, too. HomeBank's account wizard even lets you enter a number range for your paper checks (or "cheques").

HomeBank's layout breaks down your finances into three intuitive parts: Your Accounts, Where Your Money Goes, and Scheduled Transactions. A color-coded pie chart shows at a glance "where your money goes," which is the first step in getting control of your finances. You'll need some data and some transaction records to take advantage of HomeBank's analysis features and other extras. The wizard gave us lots of options for selecting folders to index, including highly-specific choices like Instant Messenger messages or IBM Lotus Domino server. We selected My Computer, Mobile Device, and some other resources. We chose Inherited Settings, which is the default selection. We expected the indexing to take a long time, but it only took a second. Searches finished just as quickly, too. But searching is only part of what Archivarius 3000 can do; for example, clicking "Scheduler" let us schedule start and end times and other options for adding and indexing new data.
Every time Archivarius 3000 returns data more quickly than conventional search tools, it's earning its keep by saving you precious time. If you have a ton of items to keep track of and need help locating the right IM or document, this tool can help you find it almost instantly.

That's what we did, copying data from a USB drive, deleting it, and emptying the Recycle Bin before starting the Deleted File Recovery Wizard.

The tool's first screen let us search for a lost file automatically or by file type and also opt to ignore bad sectors. Easeus Data Recovery Wizard quickly found the files in automatic mode, displaying its results in a separate, tabbed File Preview window. We selected the files we wanted to recover and pressed Next. We chose an output directory from a screen that displayed available drive capacity -- a nice touch. The recovery operation finished almost immediately. We clicked on the drive link in the notification screen, and the destination folder opened with our recovered data intact and available.

Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition is a capable performer, even with the 1GB limit. Most users probably want to recover a specific piece of data, like a file or folder that was deleted accidentally. If you've deleted something you meant to keep, try the free tool first. If you need more, you don't have to download or scan your system again but can upgrade Easeus Data Recovery Wizard in place.

There may be some manual data entry on your part, but Music Collection helps you organize all of your music, efficiently, so that you can locate any song, album, or artist quickly and easily. You can create as many collections as you would like and port them in a Microsoft Access format. Even though most of its organization features are already available in actual music players, you might like it if you're really into organizing your music and want to have a separate system just for the details of your entire collection.

Music Collection helps you organize your collection and target any new releases you want to purchase. Sadly, it won't scan your existing files and add them to the collection. You can't import any information from a ripped or downloaded CD, either. Instead, you have to enter all of the information in, manually, or download it from the Web. Once you get the information inside, you can organize it however you like -- by year, genre, artist, and more. Music Collection lets you assign very specific tags to your collection, including its price, barcode, and even sound quality. The program will search for album art on its own, so you don't have to worry about those files. The program's layout is very clean and has one-touch operation for all of its most popular features. If you wish to change the way it looks, though, you can easily do so via Settings -- Look & Feel. There are around 30 skins to choose from.

There's a lot to do with this program, but you can do most of it with iTunes and Windows Media, as well. If you want to keep your collection notes separate from the files themselves, however, then Music Collection is worth try.
