Advanced SystemCare

All it takes it a single visit to a compromised Web site to snare a nasty piece of malware or to pick up cookies that track your every browsing move. And there's nothing worse than a computer that is bogged down so much that it impedes your ability to work or play games. Advanced Systemcare aims to remedy whatever ails your computer by not only cleaning up junk files, malware, and invalid registry entries, but by giving your computer a boost to optimize your PC experience.
Advanced Systemcare's interface is broken down into four maintenance categories so as to not overwhelm you: Quick Care, Deep Care, Toolbox, and Turbo Boost. We started with Quick Care and with the Quick Malware Removal feature. We clicked Scan and the program quickly went to work and came back with no issues. (In all fairness, we regularly run full PC scans using our own security software, so we didn't expect the program to find anything here.) Next up to bat was the Registry Fix, which came back with a whopping 597 problems. We found this a little fishy since we had just tested a very reputable registry cleaner that had found and fixed all of our registry issues. Still, we went through the process of checking and unchecking which files we wanted the program to fix. Once we clicked the Repair Now option, the program went to work and the problem registry entries were remedied in a matter of seconds. The Deep Care feature takes it all a step further by offering deeper scans, as well as a Registry Defrag option, which we successfully used to tidy up our registry. We were a little miffed that the program didn't ask us if we wanted to back up our registry before making any changes. However, we'll give it a slight pass because the program does include a Rescue feature that lets you undo any registry changes, and offers the ability to create a restore point, which we recommend you do before you touch your registry. Our final stop on the tour was the Turbo Boost feature. From there, we selected Work Mode, which let us manually disable unnecessary services and background applications. We were skeptical of it actually doing anything to speed up our computer, but we have to admit that we did notice a slight difference in our computer's speed, and for the better. The program does include an online help guide, though we don't think you'll need it for handling basic cleaning tasks.
Pay close attention while installing Advanced Systemcare because it'll install an IObit toolbar if you don't decline. The program also leaves a folder behind after uninstallation. Still, we recommend it as a worthwhile program for keeping your system running on all cylinders.

BootSkin

Are you tired of the drudgery that is your Windows start-up screen? This handy piece of freeware adds spice to your PC by letting you customize your Windows 2000/XP boot screen. At 871K, BootSkin is a quick, space-conscious download. It allows you to easily change your boot screen without patching the Windows XP kernel, keeping your system stable and the size of your skins manageable. The straightforward interface offers a couple of stock skins and allows you to import them from the Web and create your own. Although BootSkin is not brimming with features, it's still a nice way to add a personal touch to your PC.

PdfMerge

PDFMerge is the sort of tool we've come to expect from Free PDF Solutions; a streamlined application that essentially makes it as easy as possible to do one job. In the case of PDFMerge, it's merging multiple PDFs into single documents. PDFMerge is based on the PDFSharp library. In addition to being free, PDFMerge's advantages are its small size (572.27KB) and speed. The latest version of PDFMerge, v1.19, has a new user interface. It supports Windows 98 to 8; we ran it on Windows 7.
Optional downloads are as common with freeware as commercials with broadcast TV, and PDFMerge is no exception, though with an emphasis on "optional." We declined the extras and opened PDFMerge's dialog-style graphical user interface, which has four buttons: "Add PDF File," "Remove Selected," and "Remove All," for adding files to the program's main window, and a "Merge Now" button next to the field for choosing a destination folder. All were easy to use, although we were surprised that we couldn't drag and drop files into PDFMerge. Up and Down arrows let us reposition documents within our queue. We started simple with a pair of multipage PDFs. PDFMerge finished the job so quickly we were unaware anything had happened, yet our target folder held the merged PDF, which opened and displayed normally in our default PDF viewer. Much larger batches took longer, of course, but the speed was still impressive, overall. While PDFMerge doesn't offer a Help file or any extras, its Web page includes some instructions and a support link.
If you need more settings or complexity, other PDF tools are available; some of them free, too. But within its scope, PDFMerge is a viable alternative to expensive, complex, all-in-one PDF programs if you just need to merge documents with ease.

HOW TO MAKE USB BOOTABLE

You are here:  Tutorials > How to setup Windows 7or Windows 8 from USB drive?

Step1: Create Bootable USB Drive:
  1. Start PowerISO (v4.8 or newer version, download here).
  2. Insert the USB drive you intend to boot from.
  3. Choose the menu "Tools > Create Bootable USB Drive". The "Create Bootable USB Drive" dialog will popup. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 / 8 operating system, you need confirm the UAC dialog to continue.
  4. In "Create Bootable USB Drive" dialog, click "..." button to open the iso file of Windows 7 or Windows 8.
  5. Select the correct USB drive from the "Destination USB Drive" list if multiple USB drives are connected to the computer.
  6. Choose the proper writing method. "USB-HDD" is recommended.
  7. Click "Start" button to start creating windows 7 / 8 bootable USB drive.
If no errors occurred in the above process, you should now be all set to setup Windows 7 / 8 from USB drive!

Step 2: Configuring the BIOS:
You should now reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to boot from USB. Instructions for doing so wildly from system to system, but generally entail the following:
  1. Reboot the system.
  2. While booting (before Windows starts loading), get into the BIOS configuration screen by hitting something like F1, F2, Delete or Escape. Hotkey instructions are generally provided on the screen.
  3. Go to the section that contains your boot devices.
  4. With your USB drive plugged in, the USB drive should be listed. If it isn’t, your system might not support booting from USB. Assuming that it is supported (as is the case with virtually all modern hardware), promote your USB drive to the primary boot device.
  5. Exit from the BIOS configuration, saving all changes.
If you’re completely new to BIOS configuration, BIOS for Beginners over at Tom’s Hardware might be a good primer. Be aware though, that you can seriously screw up your system by providing incorrect settings!

Step 3: Booting and setup windows 7 / Windows 8 from USB drive:
Assuming that you properly configured your BIOS and your USB drive supports booting,  Windows 7 / 8 setup should now load. Depending on the speed of your USB drive, this may take a while.
If it isn’t working, then double-check the following before making a scene:
  • Is your BIOS properly configured for booting from the USB device? (Is the USB device listed and does it have top priority?)
  • Have you correctly prepared the USB drive in step one? (Restart the procedure.)
  • Does your USB drive properly support being booted from? (Try another one!)

Hidden Talents in Windows 7 System Restore

Windows System Restore has got me and I suspect a lot of you out of trouble following a major crash or messed up installation but in Windows 7 it goes even further. A little known feature in Win 7 System Restore (and Windows Backup), called Previous Versions, can recover just about any file stored on your PC. However, in order for it to work System Restore, and this facility must be enabled, so if you are not sure press Winkey + Break, select System Protection then click the Configure button and make sure Restore system settings and previous versions of files is checked. Click OK and if System Restore wasn’t on click the Create button to set a new Restore Point (RP). Follow the prompts to give it a name, close the dialogue boxes and you are all set. If something unfortunate happens and you need to recover a lost or corrupted file all you have to do is open Windows Explorer, right click on the folder where it is/was kept and select Restore Previous Versions. After a few moments it should list by date all of the saved versions of the file you are after.

Change Window 7 Start button

The Windows Start button has always been fiendishly difficult to change manually, involving a lot of messing around with image files and Registry settings. It’s still quite tricky to do it by hand in Windows 7 but help is at hand in the shape of a freeware utility called Windows 7 Start Button Changer. This simple to use program lets you quickly switch from the standard button to another ready prepared one (and restore the original if you don’t like what you see), and there’s quite a few free buttons on the web to choose from. But it’s a whole lot more fun to make your own. All you have to do is create three small round symbols or orbs, each around 38 pixels in diameter and drop them neatly into a 54 x 162 pixel frame, fill it with a black background and save it as a bitmap. You can do all that and more with the excellent free image editor Photofiltre. This fairly crude example only took me around five minutes (and yes, I know you can tell, but just imagine how good it would be if I had spent 10 minutes on it…).
