Likasoft's Archivarius 3000 is an enterprise-class data indexing search tool that's affordable enough for busy home users. Archivarius 3000 searches documents and e-mail on your PC, LAN, and removable drives. It can find, extract, and save information about particular documents, even archived documents. Archivarius 3000 is available in specific (but basically identical) versions for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows; we tried the 64-bit edition in Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Archivarius 3000 presents a clean, efficient, and easy-to-manage user interface. The program opened with a What Is New splash followed by a clearly-worded, eight-step Create Index Wizard. Essentially, Archivarius 3000 creates an index of all your data that it then uses for super-quick searches when you need something. The wizard gave us lots of options for selecting folders to index, including highly-specific choices like Instant Messenger messages or IBM Lotus Domino server. We selected My Computer, Mobile Device, and some other resources. We chose Inherited Settings, which is the default selection. We expected the indexing to take a long time, but it only took a second. Searches finished just as quickly, too. But searching is only part of what Archivarius 3000 can do; for example, clicking "Scheduler" let us schedule start and end times and other options for adding and indexing new data.
Every time Archivarius 3000 returns data more quickly than conventional search tools, it's earning its keep by saving you precious time. If you have a ton of items to keep track of and need help locating the right IM or document, this tool can help you find it almost instantly.

MP3 Quality Modifier is portable freeware.

When we first ran MP3 Quality Modifier, the program opened with a brief but concise and helpful startup guide. There's also a Help menu with lots of additional information about each step, plus an MP3 Information sheet that explains concepts like bit rate and ID3 tags. However, the program's clean, efficient, and no-nonsense layout and intuitive controls make MP3 Quality Modifier easy to understand. With file conversion software (especially music tools) we always check the settings first. MP3 Quality Modifier's Settings sheet has useful Window, Loading, and Language options, plus an Additional Options sheet that let us set minimum and maximum bit rate; adopt Folder structures, ID3 tags, and File dates; and set processing priority and accuracy. The settings most users will need most often are right on the interface: including Bit rate Mode (Constant, Average, and Variable, with variable range options) and Modus, which let us choose Mono, Stereo, Joint Stereo, or Dual Channel options (see MP3 Information for more on these rare and extremely useful options).

It's easy to convert digital audio files to lower quality. It's much harder to do in reverse (GIGO applies to audio, too) but MP3 Quality Modifier makes the most of what's already there. Our first file grew by 37 percent in size, although obviously not as much in quality, but we were pleased with the results. MP3 Quality Modifier will be of greatest use in standardizing bit rates, for instance, as well as for those times when you need to convert a stereo mix to mono. Much of what it does, no other freeware we've seen can do.

Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition recovers deleted files, even if you've emptied the Recycling Bin or deleted them directly (and provided they haven't been securely deleted with multiple passes). It's compatible with dynamic disks and all Windows file systems, from FAT to NTFS and EXT, and it can skip bad sectors automatically for quicker scanning. Easeus Data Recovery Wizard is fully functional freeware with a 1GB recovery limit that serves as a trial for a paid upgrade. The latest version of Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition sports an improved user interface and Windows 8 compatibility.

True to its name, Easeus Data Recovery Wizard is a wizard-based utility, starting with three simple choices: Deleted File Recovery, Complete Recovery, and Partition Recovery. It has an excellent Help file, too. It's easy to see the program in action; if you don't have files to recover, make some. That's what we did, copying data from a USB drive, deleting it, and emptying the Recycle Bin before starting the Deleted File Recovery Wizard.

The tool's first screen let us search for a lost file automatically or by file type and also opt to ignore bad sectors. Easeus Data Recovery Wizard quickly found the files in automatic mode, displaying its results in a separate, tabbed File Preview window. We selected the files we wanted to recover and pressed Next. We chose an output directory from a screen that displayed available drive capacity -- a nice touch. The recovery operation finished almost immediately. We clicked on the drive link in the notification screen, and the destination folder opened with our recovered data intact and available.

Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition is a capable performer, even with the 1GB limit. Most users probably want to recover a specific piece of data, like a file or folder that was deleted accidentally. If you've deleted something you meant to keep, try the free tool first. If you need more, you don't have to download or scan your system again but can upgrade Easeus Data Recovery Wizard in place.

There may be some manual data entry on your part, but Music Collection helps you organize all of your music, efficiently, so that you can locate any song, album, or artist quickly and easily. You can create as many collections as you would like and port them in a Microsoft Access format. Even though most of its organization features are already available in actual music players, you might like it if you're really into organizing your music and want to have a separate system just for the details of your entire collection.

Music Collection helps you organize your collection and target any new releases you want to purchase. Sadly, it won't scan your existing files and add them to the collection. You can't import any information from a ripped or downloaded CD, either. Instead, you have to enter all of the information in, manually, or download it from the Web. Once you get the information inside, you can organize it however you like -- by year, genre, artist, and more. Music Collection lets you assign very specific tags to your collection, including its price, barcode, and even sound quality. The program will search for album art on its own, so you don't have to worry about those files. The program's layout is very clean and has one-touch operation for all of its most popular features. If you wish to change the way it looks, though, you can easily do so via Settings -- Look & Feel. There are around 30 skins to choose from.

There's a lot to do with this program, but you can do most of it with iTunes and Windows Media, as well. If you want to keep your collection notes separate from the files themselves, however, then Music Collection is worth try.

M4A is the file extension for MPEG-4 Audio, the audio part of your MPEG-4 videos. Apple has used the M4a (small "a") designation for several of the low-loss audio formats it's sold for years at the iTunes Store. To add to the confusion, some have digital rights management encryption, and some don't. To make a long story short, compatibility is the issue, especially for people with large MP3 collections. Maniac Tools' Free M4a to MP3 Converter does what its name indicates: it converts M4a, AAC, 3GP, and MP4 Audio files to MP3s (or WAVs) that are compatible with most media players and portables. While we're on the subject of compatibility, we should point out that Free M4A to MP3 Converter doesn't convert or play M4B files used by audiobooks.

Free M4a to MP3 Converter's simple user interface is easy to understand. It has a two-tiered toolbar, but only the top row contains buttons that activate Free M4a to MP3 Converter's features, the Add, Remove, Play, and Convert buttons. The bottom row links to other Manic utilities functionally related to Free M4a to MP3 Converter, such as ID3 Tag Editor, MP3 Splitter/Joiner, and Movienizer. We didn't try these downloads. But the M4a tool proved easy to use and capable. We changed the destination from Explorer's Music folder to our own destination; we could also specify whether we wanted the tool to save converted files in the destination folder or som

ewhere else. Under Output Formats, clicking the Setup button opened a simple tool for setting MP3 audio quality and some general preferences. While all this was really pretty easy, there's a good Help file. A Notifications Area on the program's menu bar popped up with notice of more of the developer's tools.

When we'd set Free M4a to MP3 Converter's options, we merely had to add our files, select the output format, and press Convert. Many a music collection contains some orphan files awaiting conversion, and we found a few without too much trouble. The converted MP3s played normally and sounded great, too, in our usual media player, though Free M4a to MP3 Converter plays files, too.
